Unlocking Dudley South with the Dasher
Building on the proven success of the Stourbridge Shuttle, the case for extending local rail connectivity through the proposed Stourbridge Dasher remains both clear and compelling. The project offers a practical, lower-cost opportunity to reconnect Stourbridge with Brierley Hill and the wider Dudley area – unlocking access to jobs, education, and economic growth.
However, while local support for the scheme continues to strengthen, progress has been constrained by a lack of meaningful engagement at a civil service level. Despite repeated efforts to open dialogue, develop business cases, and align the project with regional priorities, there has been limited proactive movement to explore how schemes like the Dasher can be supported.
This stands in contrast to the wider transport landscape across the West Midlands. Significant investment has been directed toward large-scale infrastructure projects – many of which have experienced substantial cost increases over time. Against this backdrop, areas such as Southern Dudley and Stourbridge risk being overlooked, despite clear evidence of demand and deliverability.
The Dasher represents a different approach. By utilising existing corridors and Very Light Rail technology, it offers a solution that is not only more affordable but also faster to deliver. It is a scheme designed around local needs and real-world usage rather than large-scale complexity.
Importantly, this is not about competing with major projects, but about ensuring balance in regional investment. Communities in Stourbridge and the surrounding areas deserve the same level of attention and ambition when it comes to transport connectivity.
Our continued pursuit of local council and authority funding remains a key part of the strategy, alongside ongoing efforts to engage constructively with regional and national stakeholders. The foundations are already in place: strong public support, a proven operational model in the Shuttle, and a clear, deliverable route forward.
It’s time to recognise the value of scalable, community-led solutions and take the steps needed to bring them forward.
