Maintenance and Growth
With passenger numbers now exceeding 8 million since opening, and demand continuing to rise, planning for the future has become a key priority. The 2026/27 growth plan focuses not only on maintaining high service standards but also on ensuring the Shuttle is fully prepared to meet increasing demand in the years ahead.
A central part of this strategy is a renewed focus on internal maintenance and fleet resilience. The Shuttle’s Class 139 vehicles, which have been at the core of operations since 2009, are undergoing continued in-house care and targeted upgrades to ensure they remain reliable, efficient, and fit for purpose.
By working with West Midlands Trains to invest in internal maintenance capabilities, the operation will have greater control over performance, turnaround times, and long-term asset management. This approach reduces reliance on external processes and allows for quicker interventions when needed – helping to sustain our consistently high reliability levels that passengers have come to expect.
This work is not just about engineering – it is about protecting a service that the Stourbridge community depends on. Every improvement we make behind the scenes supports the passenger experience, keeping journeys smooth, predictable, and accessible.
At the same time, the Shuttle continues to contribute to local economic activity. Its frequent, dependable service supports footfall into Stourbridge town centre while maintaining strong connections to the wider rail network at Stourbridge Junction.
As we move into the next railway year, our focus is clear: sustain what works, strengthen what matters, and prepare for growth. By combining community-focused service with proactive maintenance and planning, the Stourbridge Shuttle is ensuring it remains a reliable backbone of local transport for years to come.
