Over 8 Million Passenger Journeys
In a transport landscape often dominated by billion-pound infrastructure projects, the Stourbridge Shuttle stands as a reminder that impact is not always measured in scale. Operating on just 0.8 miles of track between Stourbridge Town and Stourbridge Junction, this small branch line continues to deliver a big impact for the local community.
Now having carried over 8 million passengers since opening in 2009, the Shuttle is firmly re-establishing itself as one of the UK’s most successful local rail services. Following the challenges of the pandemic years, passenger numbers have now returned to pre-COVID levels, with the service on track to surpass 9 million journeys by late 2027.
Since its launch, the Shuttle has become an essential part of everyday life in Stourbridge.
Whether it’s commuters connecting to the wider rail network, students travelling to college, or residents accessing local amenities, the service plays a vital role in keeping the town moving.
Running on a turn-up-and-go basis, with frequent departures throughout the day, the Shuttle offers a level of convenience more commonly associated with urban metro systems. This reliability is reflected in its exceptional performance, consistently achieving around 99.6% punctuality- making it one of the most dependable rail services in the UK.
What makes our Shuttle particularly distinctive is its use of Very Light Rail technology. Though the Class 139 vehicles were designed in the early 2000s, they are lightweight, energy-efficient, and specifically designed for short, high-frequency routes. This allows for lower operating costs while maintaining a high-quality passenger experience.
More than just a transport link, the Shuttle demonstrates how underused branch lines can be transformed into efficient, affordable services that directly benefit communities.
As passenger numbers continue to grow, the message is clear: when rail is designed around local need, people use it.
